Overview

Yatta is the largest town in the southern West Bank and a major population center of Hebron Governorate. Located on the edge of the Judean Desert, Yatta sits at the northern boundary of Masafer Yatta (South Hebron Hills), a region of Palestinian villages and hamlets that has been targeted by Israel's Firing Zone 918 — a military zone declared in the 1970s over 35,000 dunums of Palestinian-inhabited land. The town serves as a commercial and service hub for surrounding rural communities and villages in the South Hebron Hills. Since 1967, Yatta has faced severe restrictions on expansion due to Area C classification of surrounding lands, settlement encroachment from Kiryat Arba and other settlements, and the constant threat of home demolitions. The town's growth is constrained by Israeli military orders prohibiting construction in Area C, forcing residents to build without permits and face demolition orders.

Historical Significance

Yatta is identified with the biblical Juttah and is one of the oldest continuously inhabited towns in the Hebron region. It serves as the gateway to Masafer Yatta and the South Hebron Hills, an area internationally recognized for its unique Palestinian cave-dwelling communities who have inhabited the region for centuries. Since 2022, the Israeli High Court has ruled that over 1,000 Palestinians in Masafer Yatta can be forcibly expelled from their homes under the pretext of living in a 'firing zone' — one of the largest potential mass expulsions in the West Bank since 1967. Yatta is the base for numerous Palestinian and international human rights organizations documenting settler violence and military abuses in the South Hebron Hills.
