Turmus Ayya is a Palestinian town in the Ramallah Governorate known for its unusual prosperity funded by diaspora remittances. An estimated 80% of residents hold US passports, and the town has one of the highest standards of living in the West Bank, evident in the large modern villas built with American-earned money. This diaspora connection dates to the early 20th century when Turmus Ayya residents began emigrating to the United States, particularly to the Chicago area. Despite this prosperity, the town faces the same occupation pressures as other Palestinian communities. The Shilo settlement to the east and Eli settlement to the northeast sit on lands confiscated from Turmus Ayya and neighboring communities. In June 2023, four Turmus Ayya residents were killed in a settler rampage through the town — an attack that drew international attention to the escalating settler violence against Palestinian communities.
