Overview
Lakiya is a planned Bedouin township in the northern Negev, established in 1985. Unlike the other six townships, Lakiya has developed a reputation for more successful community organization and economic initiatives, including a women's weaving cooperative that has gained international recognition. However, it still faces the fundamental challenges of all Bedouin townships: high unemployment, limited land, inadequate infrastructure, and the trauma of forced displacement from traditional lands. Lakiya's residents come primarily from the al-Wuhaydi and other Bedouin tribes who were moved from their traditional grazing areas.
Historical Significance
Planned Bedouin township; known for Lakiya Negev Weaving cooperative — internationally recognized women's cooperative.
