Overview
Kuseife is a planned Bedouin township in the Negev Desert, established in the 1980s to concentrate Bedouin families from the surrounding area. Like the other six Bedouin townships, Kuseife was not an organic settlement but a government-imposed urbanization project. The town's residents come primarily from Bedouin tribes displaced from their traditional grazing lands in the central Negev. Kuseife suffers from the same problems as other Bedouin townships: unemployment estimated at 45%+, inadequate schools, crumbling infrastructure, and severe social challenges resulting from the disruption of traditional Bedouin society.
Historical Significance
Planned Bedouin township in the Negev; product of forced urbanization policy.
