Overview
Kafr Kanna is a Palestinian town in the Lower Galilee widely identified as the biblical Cana, where Jesus Christ performed his first miracle — turning water into wine at the wedding feast. This makes it an important Christian pilgrimage site, though the town itself is predominantly Muslim today. Before 1948, it was a village of about 1,500 residents cultivating grains, olives, and vegetables. During the 1948 Nakba, Kafr Kanna came under Israeli control but avoided expulsion, though it lost agricultural land to confiscation and was subjected to military rule until 1966. The town has grown significantly and is known for maintaining strong community cohesion.
Historical Significance
Identified as biblical Cana of Galilee (Jesus' first miracle); Christian pilgrimage site; Palestinian town in Lower Galilee surviving 1948.
