Overview
Jenin (Arabic: جنين, from Jinin meaning 'the garden' or 'the spring') is the northernmost Palestinian city in the West Bank and the capital of Jenin Governorate. Located at the junction of the Jezreel Valley and the northern hills, Jenin has been a strategic crossroads and agricultural center for millennia. The city and its surrounding villages form the agricultural heartland of the northern West Bank, famous for wheat, olives, and vegetable production. Since 1967, Jenin has been under Israeli military occupation, and the city has suffered disproportionately from settlement expansion, military operations, and movement restrictions. The nearby settlement of Shavei Shomron (established 1977) and the multiple checkpoints surrounding the city — including the infamous Jalameh checkpoint to the north and the Dotan checkpoint to the south — have strangled its economy and separated it from its agricultural hinterland. Jenin became internationally known as the 'Martyr's Capital' after the devastating Israeli invasion of Jenin Refugee Camp in April 2002 (Operation Defensive Shield), when the camp was heavily bombarded, hundreds of homes were demolished, and dozens of Palestinians were killed. The city remains a symbol of Palestinian steadfastness and resistance.
Historical Significance
Strategic gateway between the Jezreel Valley and northern West Bank hills; historic agricultural center known as 'the garden' of Palestine; site of the 2002 Battle of Jenin; home to the Jenin Freedom Theatre, a beacon of cultural resistance.
