Overview

Jaffa was the cultural and economic capital of Palestine before 1948, a thriving port city of over 70,000 Palestinians with a cosmopolitan character that drew visitors from across the world. Known as the 'Bride of Palestine,' Jaffa produced Palestine's most famous export — the Jaffa orange — and was home to the country's largest Arab press, theaters, cinemas, and cultural institutions. In April-May 1948, Zionist paramilitary forces including the Irgun and Haganah attacked the city, systematically expelling approximately 95% of its Palestinian population. Over 50,000 Palestinians were driven into the sea, fleeing by boat to Gaza, Egypt, and Lebanon; thousands more were forced on death marches. By 1949, only 3,000-4,000 Palestinians remained of a population exceeding 70,000. The vast majority of Jaffa's Palestinians became refugees, primarily in Gaza, Egypt, and Lebanon, where many remain displaced to this day. The city's magnificent old quarters were demolished, its orchards uprooted, and its Arab identity systematically erased. Jaffa was formally annexed to Tel Aviv municipality in 1950, becoming a marginal neighborhood of the city that replaced it. Today, the remaining Palestinian community faces intense gentrification, housing demolition, and cultural erasure.

Historical Significance

Cultural and economic capital of Palestine before 1948; birthplace of Palestinian cinema, theater, and press; world's most famous citrus brand; symbol of Palestinian cultural destruction and resilience; site of systematic ethnic cleansing in 1948.
