Overview
Hura is one of the seven planned Bedouin townships established by Israel in the Negev (Naqab) Desert as part of its forced urbanization policy for the Negev Bedouin. Like Rahat, Hura was not an organic settlement but a government-planned concentration point for Bedouin families removed from their traditional lands. The town was officially recognized in 1996, though families had begun relocating there in the 1980s under pressure. Hura's residents come primarily from the al-Qarnawi and other Bedouin tribes who were displaced from their traditional grazing lands. The town suffers from the same problems as other Bedouin townships: high unemployment (40%+), inadequate infrastructure, underfunded schools, and loss of traditional livelihoods. Many Hura residents maintain claims to unrecognized villages and lands from which they were displaced.
Historical Significance
Planned Bedouin township in the Negev; product of forced urbanization policy; symbol of Negev Bedouin displacement.
