Overview
Fureidis is a Palestinian town on the coastal plain near Haifa. Before 1948, it was a village of about 700 residents cultivating grains and vegetables. During the 1948 Nakba, Fureidis was unusual in that it was not attacked or depopulated — reportedly because the village mukhtar (headman) maintained good relations with nearby Jewish forces. However, the village still came under Israeli control, was subjected to military rule until 1966, and lost agricultural land to confiscation. The town has grown to about 13,000 residents and is known for its relatively higher socioeconomic status compared to other Palestinian towns.
Historical Significance
