Overview

Bethlehem is one of the oldest and most historically significant cities in the world. Known as the birthplace of Jesus Christ and the city of King David, it has been a center of Christian pilgrimage for two millennia. The city's modern history has been profoundly shaped by Israeli occupation and settlement policies. Following the 1967 occupation, Israel began establishing settlements on Bethlehem's periphery. The Har Homa settlement (built on Jabal Abu Ghneim, Bethlehem land) and the Gilo settlement (on hills west of the city) have physically encroached on Bethlehem's territory. The separation wall, constructed beginning in 2002, surrounds Bethlehem on three sides, cutting it off from Jerusalem — just 8 km to the north but now virtually inaccessible for most residents. The Rachel's Tomb checkpoint (Checkpoint 300) is the main crossing point, where Palestinians face long queues, permit requirements, and unpredictable closures. The wall has separated Bethlehem from the Jerusalem seam zone, annexed large areas of Bethlehem's northern municipal land (including the Rachel's Tomb compound), and trapped the city in a shrinking envelope of territory. Christian residents, who formed the majority of Bethlehem's population before 1948, have been declining as a percentage due to emigration driven by occupation pressures, settlement encroachment, economic hardship, and the daily humiliation of checkpoint regimes. The 2002 siege of the Church of the Nativity by Israeli forces became an international symbol of Palestinian resistance under occupation.

Historical Significance

Birthplace of Jesus Christ and traditional birthplace of King David; one of the holiest sites in Christianity. The Church of the Nativity, built in 339 CE, is one of the oldest continuously operating churches in the world. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2012. The city has been a center of Christian pilgrimage for nearly 2,000 years.

Bethlehem's Christian population faces an existential crisis due to occupation pressures, settlement encroachment, and the checkpoint regime. The separation wall has physically and psychologically severed the city from Jerusalem despite their 8 km proximity.
