Overview
Ar'arat an-Naqab (Ar'arat al-Naqab) is a planned Bedouin township in the Negev Desert, established in the 1980s. Like other Bedouin townships, it was created as part of Israel's policy of concentrating the Negev Bedouin population into planned urban centers. The town's name references the Negev (Naqab) Desert and maintains a connection to Bedouin identity. Residents were relocated from traditional grazing lands in the northern Negev. The township faces the same challenges as other Bedouin towns: high unemployment, inadequate infrastructure, underfunded schools, and the social disruption caused by forced urbanization.
Historical Significance
Planned Bedouin township in the Negev; product of forced urbanization.
