Overview

Al-Ram is a Palestinian town that lies just northeast of Jerusalem's municipal border, directly adjacent to the Qalandia Refugee Camp and checkpoint. The town forms part of the built-up urban continuum between Jerusalem and Ramallah, serving as a major commercial and transportation hub connecting the two cities. Al-Ram's strategic location on the main Jerusalem-Ramallah road has made it a center of commercial activity, but also placed it directly in the path of the separation wall. The wall cuts through Al-Ram's southern lands, separating the town from Jerusalem. The Qalandia checkpoint — the busiest checkpoint in the West Bank — sits just south of Al-Ram and serves as the primary chokepoint controlling Palestinian movement between the northern and southern West Bank. Thousands of Palestinians pass through daily, facing long queues, body searches, and unpredictable closures. The town's economy is heavily dependent on this traffic, with numerous shops, restaurants, and services catering to travelers. However, the checkpoint regime has also created a volatile environment, with frequent clashes between Palestinian youth and Israeli forces.

Historical Significance

Al-Ram sits on the historic Jerusalem-Ramallah road, one of the most important transportation corridors in Palestine. Its proximity to Qalandia — site of the main West Bank checkpoint — has made it a symbol of the occupation's control over Palestinian movement. The town's market serves the massive flow of people through the checkpoint.
